Sarah, the kitchen maid, teaches me how to cook. She is a little plump woman with chestnut-colored hair like me and kind eyes.
This is my first time cooking. I watch excitedly as Sarah makes cookies. Just watching, nothing more. I was amazed by everything I saw for the first time, but Clew was different.
As we waited for the cookies in the large oven to bake, Clew spoke up.
"This seems wrong, doesn't it? Anna hasn't helped at all, right?"
"Come to think of it, you're right. This can't be called my handiwork."
When I say this to Sarah, she looks at me wide-eyed in surprise.
"Eh? Were you seriously planning to make it?"
It seems there was a misunderstanding. It seems Sarah was only told by the chef to make cookies instead of me.
I insisted that I really wanted to make them myself for my fiancé. And I also told her that my fiancé doesn't really like sweet things.
"I see. Then how about crepes? Crepes can have various flavors depending on the filling."
"Crepes? I've never had them."
"Yes. It's from my hometown. I think your fiancé might be surprised because they're rather different."
I feel like I want to see Edmond's surprised face. So I immediately took instructions from Sarah.
Even though the temperature can be adjusted with magic stones, baking thin dough is quite difficult. At first, the dough tore, and I couldn't bake it like Sarah. But the crepes I made by skillfully rolling up the torn dough were very delicious. Even though it only had apricot jam inside, it was very delicious. Clew also wanted to eat it, so I secretly gave him some, and he was very happy.
In addition to crepes, I learned how to make cookies, simple cakes, omelets, and soups from Sarah. She was surprised why, I as a daughter of a marquis, would want to learn such cooking, but she taught me without asking any questions.
"I want to you to teach me how to make bread today."
It was three months since I started learning to cook.
"Bread is impossible."
"Why?"
"Bread requires a lot of strength. A child like you can't do it."
Certainly, it would be impossible for a noblewoman who has never lifted anything heavier than a fork. But I can handle frying pans and pots now.
There's a reason for this. I've been using body enhancement magic at Clew's suggestion. For the past three months, I've been learning magic from Clieu. I can't use the healing magic passed down in this house. But I can use ordinary magic. Clieu taught me the everyday magic necessary for ordinary life. Meanwhile, he also taught me body enhancement magic because I couldn't lift heavy things. Apparently, there are few who can use this magic. I'm glad I can use it. If I couldn't, I wouldn't be able to do anything.
My magical power has its limits, but it's still better than not being able to do anything.
"It's okay because I have magic to strengthen my body."
When I answered confidently, Sarah agreed.
"That's right. It's strange when I just look at you, I wonder where that power comes from."
Sarah murmurs as she looks at my slender arms and small hands.
I'm also curious. Body enhancement magic seems to suit me, and I can use it freely. There is a problem with (T.N: the amount of) magical power, but as long as I don't run out of it, I can use it anytime, anywhere.
Making bread certainly requires physical strength. Sarah said she envious of my magic. Although she wished to become a chef, she apparently can't match men in terms of physical strength. Generally, commoners don't have much magical power. There are occasional exceptions, and I think I'm one of them. Perhaps that's why I was used by fairies as a changeling.
"Well, there are dishes that only you can make, Sarah, so it's okay even if you don't have strength. Your crepes are the best. Lord Edmond also praised them."
I invited Edmond twice during the three months. Despite saying he didn't like sweet things, he ate all the cookies. We even had a demonstration of crepe making. I thought that if I didn't show him actually making them myself, he might think I had the cook make them.
For Edmond, who doesn't like sweet things, I made savory crepes.
Spread the crepe batter, grill the sweet and savory seasoned chicken and vegetables on top, add egg yolk, vinegar, salt, pepper, and sugar sauce, fold and roll it neatly, and place it on a plate.
It's better to eat with your hands, but since my brother Henry made a weird face when he tasted it, I had Edmond eat it with a knife and fork.
"Hmm? This is..."
After tentatively taking a bite, Edmond's eyes widened, and he devoured it with incredible speed. It's truly admirable how he doesn't lose his elegance no matter how much he rushed.
Crepes became one of Edmond's favorite foods.
